Our Booklet

Firstly, can you answer the following questions?

1. You are approaching a red traffic light in 4th gear and you are about to stop. Should you...

a) change down through third, then second and then come to a stop ?
b) go straight to neutral and coast up to a stop ?
c) check your rear mirror, apply your brakes only (progressive braking) on approach and then put the clutch in (without a gear change) just before coming to a stop ?

2. You are approaching a corner (with a give-way sign) in 4th, about to turn left. Which procedure should you follow ?

a) indicate then change down through third, then second, look right then turn.
b) indicate, change straight to second, look right, then turn.
c) check rear mirror, indicate left, start braking to appropriate speed to change straight to second gear, have an early look to your right, change straight to second (skip change, without going through third), look left and start steering then final look right before turning. After turning, check the rear mirror.

Of course, the correct answer to both of the above is "c"... but did you know the whole procedure ?

O.K.... let's try one more...

3. You are teaching your son/daughter to steer. Which of the following methods are acceptable in the ACT ? Which are acceptable in NSW ?

a) put your hands inside the wheel and pull around
b) hand over hand steering
c) put your hand on the wheel and pull down from 12 to 6, then let go of the wheel to straighten as you come out the corner
d) pull-push steering

In NSW both "b" and "d" are acceptable methods. In the ACT, only "d" is acceptable. Both "a" and "c" are considered dangerous and should never be used. But, do you know how to teach "pull-push steering" ?

You may consider yourself to be a terrific driver (and you may well be) but remember that technology has changed most things these days and the methods that you were taught may no longer be acceptable today. This is no-ones fault, as I always explain to my students. The above are only a few examples of methods that may have changed since you learned to drive.

Fortunately, I have put together a booklet which explains all of the above and much more, in simple-to-follow steps. No longer do you have to hope that the methods you are teaching will be acceptable. You can confidently teach your son/daughter the correct techniques and prepare them for professional instruction, before passing them on to an Accredited Driving Instructor.

Practice is paramount if the Learner Driver is to eventually reach the stage of Provisional Driver. However, in my experience, parents and other non-professional teachers are often caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to driver tuition. They mean well, but are they teaching the student techniques which will meet the present standards ? Unfortunately, some driving methods which were taught in the past may no longer be considered acceptable in some States. So why not make sure from the start that what you are being taught is "proper" ? This book may save you hundreds of dollars before you even start taking professional driving lessons. Get back on track now by following the excellent advice and tips in this comprehensive tuition guide for Learner Drivers !
